Tony Souza RIP
November 2nd, 2016
Too often after losing a family member a person wishes they had spent more time with them. That’s the case with my nephew Tony Souza. I knew he was sick and the eventuality was we’d probably lose him. Maybe that’s the reason that I was distant. Now it’s too late and it will always be a regret.
Tony lost his battle with cancer on September 20th, 2016 and it was a battle. Toward the end, every time I saw him he seemed at peace. And every time before I saw him I found myself wondering how would I handle knowing that I was going to die. Tony gave me a great example of how I’d like to handle it. He was a father that loved his his kids dearly and when he was playing he could be like a little kid himself. Tony was a photogenic devil and had a smile that would light the room as well as your heart. I remember amazing him and his brother with mediocre nun chuck skills when they were younger. He never had an easy road and though some would say it was self inflicted I’d say a lot of it was just normal. Tony reminded me of me. Prone to mischief but massive amounts of love. It was the love that became Tony’s identity as he grew into a man. Love from a life defined by hardship. As I watched him struggle I saw him become more of man than myself.
Tony’s memorial service was today, October 29th. There were many tears, not for Tony but for those of us that will miss him. I think everyone knows he’s in a much better place and cancer free. He’s making somebody laugh. His mom told the youngest of his children that he went to work for God. I hope my ways here are good enough that when I pass I’ll see him and he can kind of tell me what’s going on and the way things work. His sisters and brother all spoke of him today at his service today. Following are comments from many who were in attendance. Some of them would only be understood by Tony and the person that wrote it. His brother declined to comment but he made us all laugh as he reminisced about Tony. The two had a unique relationship in the family.
