Are You Thinking Of Starting A Blog?

Why blog? I’ve been blogging for 2 years in February. It’s sooooo therapeutic. I don’t get a lot of comments and It seems I won’t be getting rich from it anytime soon. I have all kinds of ideas pinging around in my head and they’re the type of ideas that don’t come up in normal conversation. Well normal conversation for myself and my social circle anyway. I mention tidbits of what’s on my mind to my ex-wife but it only gets 1 to 3 word answers so the conversation lasts 5 minutes. She says she’s just not into the same things that I’m into so we keep it to small talk and pleasantries. I have buddies scattered throughout the U.S. but they have a very limited tolerance for deep conversations as well. I’d give my middle fingers for someone to relate to my website and blogs. My middle fingers would be sorely missed. I use them quit a bit but it would so be worth it.

Depending on the topic I can do days of research ( sometimes pages and pages of highly technical information ) or make it very personal like the blog you’re reading now. These takes almost no research. When I blog by request there tends to be more research. It may get a little tedious still I like to put the information out there. Someone could be considering becoming a blogger. To that person I say realize the amount of commitment to put out a regular blog. If I never get another comment or suggestion I will continue to blog. It gives me peace of mind.

I didn’t have a large network of potential readers but I do have a very unique niche (Home keeping and the Universe). If you have both you’re two steps ahead. You need to have a true curiosity or something genuine to say and you’ll do fine. I have both of those things and it’s enough to keep me blogging. With a network of readers, I’d have found heaven. Money is another aspect that I struggle with. With more money than the basic setup you can really put yourself out there. You can even hire a web designer and advisor. There’s a saying; it takes money to makes money. This is never more true than with advertising. If you can find sponsors send some this way ( lol ). Traffic to your blog is nearly the most important dimension of a money blog. My website is too crazy (I think it’s very sane and everyone else is crazy) to generate a great deal of traffic. I have to find a sponsor who supports my cause. Then I could get all the bells and whistles and advertising that I’d like HomeKeeperU to have.

I have Akismet ($5 a month) as spam blocker. For all I know some really good comments are being turned away. If there’s a link to another website in a comment Akismet blocks it. I’ll have to shop around for more plugins. Maybe there’s another one in my price range. Without a spam blocker you’ll get hundreds of comments looking for some free advertising. I use WordPress (which is free) through Bluehost ($171.00 dollars a year). Getting help from either is a bitch. WordPress has no phone contact for customer service and their forums assume you know something about computer programming. The language they use is over my head most of time. Bluehost does have a contact number but they don’t help you with anything. 90% of the time they redirect me to the WordPress forums. I don’t know who else to recommend but when I have a little more money I probably won’t be with Bluehost and WordPress.

So to anyone starting a blog today I wish you the best. I hope you meet all the goals you’ve set for your blog. I think one of your goals has to be personal satisfaction. If you plan on blogging over the long haul it’s an essential. Until next time, keep your homes well.
